Before beginning the creation of my music video I needed to complete background research to find out information about music videos and why they have become so popular. I needed to know what was the purpose of having music videos and how they came around, also the development over time, this is indicating the large growth in music videos and their popularity and demand. I also needed to research the new technologies which have helped improve music videos over time and how they have become more modern, also the conventions which are usually known with in music videos. Other parts of my research also included the theory side to music videos and contemporary issues which occur in music videos also.

In my research I have found that there are many purposes to having a music video, music videos firstly became popular because artists could show their song with out having to be live to an audience which made it easier for them to distribute their music & being seen at the same time which would still give the audience a connection with the artist and the music. After music videos became more popular they were also used for promotional purposes so the audience could have more than one way of exhibiting the music.

The development of music videos showed the popularity and demand of having a video which also linked with the song. Music videos started around the 1960s and became more popular around the 1980s where music channels became available purely for music video purposes. This would mean an increase in music videos as artists would see the opportunity in having another way of distributing their music.

Having new technologies has also changed the way in which music videos are seen; nowadays they have become a very big part of a creating a song.
